2019 Legislative Session


Assistant Desk Secretary Sean Kittridge adds the name of newly elected DFL Rep. Heather Edelson to one of the voting boards in the House Chamber. The Chief Clerk’s staff prepare for the opening of the 2019 Legislative Session on Jan. 8. The DFL picked up 18 seats and will hold a 75-55-4 advantage this session.

January 8 - OPENING DAY

February 2 - Gun Rights Rally

Ben Dorr, political director of Minnesota Gun Rights, claims that Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka has turned his back on the organization by not putting pressure on his caucus members to oppose proposed red flag and background check legislation.

February 14 - Day at the Capitol

Protect Minnesota participants lay out silhouettes of gun violence victims on the floor of the Capitol rotunda, Thursday, Feb. 14 to commemorate the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. The group is encouraging legislator’s support for expanded criminal background checks and passing the Red Flag law.

February 18 - Sovereignty Day

The Red Bone Singers made up of members of Ojibwa, Dakota, Lakota and Ho-chunk bands drum and sing as the flags of Minnesota’s eleven Tribal Nations enter the House Chamber to begin Sovereignty Day.

February 19 - Budget for One Minnesota

Gov. Tim Walz unveils his Budget for One Minnesota with a focus on making investments in education, health care and community prosperity.

February 28 - Budget and Economic Forecast

Management & Budget Commissioner Myron Frans presents the February Budget & Economic Forecast.

March 7 - Quiet Places to Work

In a beam of light on the third floor.

March 15 - Youth Climate Strike

Students filled the steps of the Capitol to protest inaction over climate change.

March 22 - REVISED Budget for One Minnesota

Gov. Tim Walz and MN Budget & Management Commissioner Myron Frans present the Revised Budget for One Minnesota during a news conference at the Capitol.

March 28 - Senate GOP Budget Proposal

April 3 - State of the State Address

Gov. Tim Walz presents his first State of the State address to a joint session of the legislature in the House Chamber.

April 10 - Winter's Last Hurrah - It's just beginning at the Capitol

Beginning on Wednesday through Friday the Twin Cities received nearly 10 inches of snow. Our official 2018-2019 season snowfall total now sits at 77.1 inches with 66 inches of snow fall since mid-January.

April 10 - Water Action Day

May 8 - Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

and U.S. Constitutional Convention

Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker talks with Sen. Torrey Westrom in the third floor hallway after meeting with senators and staff in a caucus room off the Senate Chamber. Walker is the head of the Center for State-led National Debt Solutions that hopes to convene a U.S. constitutional convention to balance the federal budget.

May 8 - Budget Talks On Hold

Conference Committees Hold Hearings

Gov. Tim Walz talks to reports about the budget talks with House and Senate leadership as he makes his way back to his office after appearing at the Water Bar pop-up exhibit in the basement of the Capitol. Conference committees continue to meet while budget talks between Gov. Walz and legislative leaders are not scheduled to meet until May 12. The House and Senate must adjourn the legislative session on May 20.

May 16 - 4 Days To Adjournment

May 19 - Budget Agreement Reached

Gov. Tim Walz announced during a news conference that a bipartisan budget agreement had been reached with House and Senate leadership.

May 20 - Swirling To Adjournment

May 24 - Special Session

Lia Harel, a senior at Hopkins High School, brought her message to the Capitol for state and national leaders to take action on climate change.
