Chiaroscuro is an Italian word meaning “light - dark”. This artistic technique can be a single bright light cast through a window in the cantilever stairs . On clear days in Spring bright sunlight shines through the windows at the base of the dome. The effect can also be seen as it lights subjects while it travels across the rotunda of the Capitol.
